building a place
when we talk about a place, buildings don’t usually come to mind; we think of a square with a bench in the corner where you used to wait for your friends, or a shady spot where you could play parcheesi or practice a dance, or the path where you walked hand in hand with your family.
its qualities stem from the activities it hosts; it invites people to linger and becomes part of the collective memory, the memories of so many who experience it. the project we present proposes building a facility that aims to blur the boundaries of the building itself, transforming it into a collective landscape-space that serves as both a threshold and a shelter. It adapts to the conditions of its context without denying any of them, responding thoughtfully to several key issues:
-the sports facilities are set back slightly to soften the visual impact of their height, creating a new, accessible topography that results in better integration with the park.
-a threshold is created between the main sports structures, which can be crossed when the park is open, turning the project itself into a new entrance.
-the cultural spaces are situated above this welcoming area, forming an elevated street—an extension of the ground plane—accessible from both the park and the city edge, with separate operating hours.
-the various components of the program are connected by a lightweight roof structure that provides shade and shelter, giving the complex the spatial quality of a continuous, usable space that is covered or open depending on the area.
