house in green. pozuelo de alarcon, madrid

The rehabilitated house is located in a residential community in western Madrid. The plot has a northern access. The main living areas of the house open onto the southern boundary of the lot, where there is a private park belonging to the community. The project involves renovations to the interior of the home as well as a radical transformation of the outdoor spaces surrounding it.

The strategy for the plot consists of dividing the surrounding space through a series of pergolas that extend from the house towards the property's perimeter and colonize the garden, creating a smoother transition between interior and exterior and providing shade against direct sunlight. The varying spacing of the pergola slats modulate these shaded spaces, distinguishing areas with more and less direct light. This strategy is enhanced by softening the linearity of the plot’s edges through the interplay of topography, masses of vegetation, and lighting.

These divisions result in four spaces around the house, each at a different elevation. The first is the entrance, which serves to bridge the elevation difference between the street and the level at which the house is situated. The next is the car area. Here stands the garage, an abstract box made of non-standard sheets of thermoformed methacrylate fabricated in the workshop, designed to detach itself from the existing structure. The next space is that of the pool and the outdoor terraces. Finally, at the lowest level, we have the lawn. The gym opens onto this space; it is a slightly sunken volume that bridges the level difference between the house’s bedroom area and the lawn.

Inside the house, the project aims to enhance large spaces that are poorly suited for residential use. Furniture is designed—such as the piece separating the dining room from the living room—to enhance both spaces and help articulate them. New finishes and elements, such as curtains and wood paneling, are also incorporated. The layout is also altered in certain areas, such as the children’s bedrooms, where movable panels allow the two rooms to be joined, creating a spacious shared play area without sacrificing privacy.
